Fabrics
I’ve done some housekeeping/re-organizing on the website,
so the fabric is organized into categories. We have dramatically increased our fabrics in the past months, and will post fall fabric in late July/early August. New arrivals are coming regularly, so bookmark the website and check back often.

What Would Nandini Do? While I read all the questions that come to me via e-mail, it is just not possible to respond personally to everyone. Here is a recent question that came to me via e-mail, which I passed on to the wise and practical Nandini (who is MY last-word design consultant):
"I have a couple of lightweight linen summer shirts that I wear as jackets. The problem is that the hem rolls up at center back from getting in and out of my work chair. Is there a technique to avoid this or to prevent it?
Thank you,
Terri "

Join Marcy and Diane Ericson for Design Outside the Lines Taos
September 25-29, 2009
There are spaces for the Design Outside the Lines retreat in Taos, September 25-29. Diane and I have been doing these retreats for over 10 years, and the feedback we hear again and again is that people’s work grows, changes and evolves after this experience. Our theme this year is Celebrating Details. |
Based on the success of this year’s DOL retreats in Santa Barbara and Sisters, Diane and I are making the focus for Taos around garments, including fitting, inventive construction and re-fashioning existing garments. As a teacher and designer, my own work is ignited after each retreat. We would love to have you join us!
Design Outside the Lines Taos is held at Mabel Dodge Luhan, a historic adobe home and intimate conference center, a short walk from Taos' central plaza. Built in 1918 by Mabel Dodge Luhan, it has attracted great artists such as Georgia O'Keefe and D. H. Lawrence. The focus for this retreat, uses the natural beauty of the environment and the inspiration of generations of southwest artists and artisans. Design focus is on bringing new inspiration into your work using collaboration and the inspiration of the environment: includes surface design, inventive techniques and exploring the creative aspects of making garments.

PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS
November 15-23, 2009
|
|
Join Marcy and Nandini in Paris for a full week with a design/fashion/sewing focus. We’ll explore the city, shop for fabric, buttons, ribbon and notions, seek out the hidden corners, find inspiration for your own designs. Marcy has been exploring Paris for 30 years, seeking the places that are out of time and so unique to this place, where the hand of the maker, ‘fait main’ can be seen and felt.
We will visit the major Madeleine Vionnet retrospective at the Musee de la Textile et du la Mode as an important part of this journey. To see examples of Vionnet’s work, simply Google her name and click on 'images'. |

Visit Marcy's booth at the American Sewing Guild Conference in Albuquerque, July 15-19, 2009
1400 mile ROAD TRIP!! Traveling in tandem with my good friend Jude, John Marshall and Theresa Maertens (Bohemian Elements). We'll be packing up much of our fabric stock, but Shelley will be in the ArtBarn office while I am away. Lots of new fabric is coming to make the journey, and when I return at the end of July, will post new fall fabrics on the website.
Marcy will be a vendor at the American Sewing Guild's annual conference in Albuquerque. Dates for vendors are July 15-19th, with the vendor exhibits opening in the evening on Wednesday July 15.
We will have LOTS of beautiful fabric, silk screens, Paris Buttons and more. This is always an inspiring and very fun event, and I look forward to seeing you there.

ArtBarn Update
Enrollment for out summer classes has been light, and our fabric sales are expanding. Change is in the air, so we have cancelled classes and are expanding our fabrics into the workshop room. While we are not set up as a traditional retail fabric store, if you are interested in shopping and seeing the fabrics first hand, call us to set up an appointment: 541-592-2969.

Books I Love
Summer is reading season, and I have updated my website section called Books I Love, adding new books and folding in recommendations from previous newsletters. Do check it out, and I appreciate it if you use my links for your Amazon purchases.
Each summer I resolve to spend time on the deck outside the studio in the hammock reading....and I am LOVING my Kindle reader! |
|
|
|
It was a pair of fellow sew-ists who introduced me to the Kindle reader. This little device has become one of my favorite life tools. Still a new concept, people stop me on airplanes and in cafes to take a look, hold it and exclaim over it. I'm a fan, love the feel of it, lightweight, great for at home, running around and travel (I used to carry 10# of books on a trip). |

Mor Far's Bluebirds
One of my 'Minnesota sisters', and dear friend, Mary Koons has written and illustrated (with quilts, including the text), a book about bluebirds, inspired by her Father. Mor Far means grandfather in Swedish. The book is a treasure, the quilt illustrations beautiful and inspiring---like the sound of bluebirds, this book evokes joy. Mary self published the book, exactly as she wanted it, so it is a limited edition, sure to become a collector's item. |

Pattern Review
Pattern Review is one of my bookmarked sites to listen in to what the sew-ists in the world are making. PatternReview.com is used by 183,253 sewers to collaborate, share and discuss the projects they have been working on, or are planning to work on. It catalogs and describes sewers experiences and opinions in a structured way so that you can quickly and easily find the information they are looking for. The value of this site keeps increasing as more and more sewers start using it. As of today there are more than 57,887 reviews. I've just signed on in their Merchant Gallery. If this is not on your internet bookmarks, do check it out!! |

New York Times Style
I've got the link to the New York Times Style-Fashion pages bookmarked, and LOVE the weekly Bill Cunningham audio slide show. He is a witty photographer who travels around Manhattan and environs on his bike taking photos and adding commentary to fashion in the street. |
|
Fashion Incubator
This extensive blog is brain child of author Kathleen Fasanella, whose highly recommended book, The Entrepreneur's Guide to Sewn Product Manufacturing will intrigue home sewists (although aimed at designer entrepreneurs). I own the book, and learn from the blog. 4 stars!! |

SewEzi Folding Sewing Table
I tested out one of these cool sewing tables at a recent workshop and loved it---and would love one for my own studio. Folding and designed to be portable (even has wheels), it is the perfect height---the machine sits down and the table comes with a clear template to fit any machine. You can also get a flat clear template so the table can be used as a light box. It is sold to be used to take to classes or on vacation, but would be a perfect solution in any studio, great for small or large spaces. |
